Well, it depends on what you consider jazz versus pop songs- but I’m not one to split hairs. To me the songs below have the same feel as standard jazz ballads and that’s good enough for me!
Since we visited Memphis over the summer and did all the Elvis stuff, I find myself listening more the Elvis station on Sirius radio and discovering some great music I either overlooked or never heard before. Recently I stumbled across this track from 1963 and was surprised to hear how Elvis’s approach reminded me a bit of Chet Baker- not what I expected from The King!

Prince’s father was a jazz musician, and some sources say his mother was a part-time jazz singer- so it’s not a surprise that he recorded at least a few tracks in that style. Silver Tongue was released to streaming services in 2024, about 8 years after Prince’s death.

Maybe some people would call them pop songs but they sound jazzy enough to me! Thanks for listening! 😎

WOW! Very cool. I never would have discovered this… it’s interesting how our musical preferences can be influenced by something simple as a vacation! I’ve been listening to Chet Baker after discovering him on Ted Lasso and I ran across the plaque in Amsterdam when we there in July. Have great week.

That’s so true about how we find music from unexpected sources! Great Chet Baker story! 😎My kids have been bugging me to start watching Ted Lasso for about two years now😅

I had no idea either. Somehow the Elvis jazz surprises more than the Prince but both are great. Thanks, Todd!

I can hear my jazz friends insisting that the Elvis song isn’t really jazz- but it’s close enough for me so I’m counting it! I was surprised too at his style on that tune!
