I was facing away from my computer as YouTube cued up the next video they thought I would enjoy. They were right! I was pretty sure the voice was Otis Redding, yet I couldn’t say what song it was and didn’t recall hearing it before.
Turns out it wasn’t Otis Redding- it was St. Paul & The Broken Bones. Paul Janeway is the voice that leads this 8-piece, southern soul, horn band from Birmingham, Alabama. Their sound is vintage in many ways yet still comes across fresh and new, at least to me.
I’ve seen them live and the show was solid- just a good band doing their thing live, with no flashy sets, lights or other things that would distract from the sound.

I LOVE it! Southern soul…and Janeway’s voice? Wow! I also loved how the music moved within him….so joyful! And I’m not a musician, so I don’t know if this is remarkable or not, especially if this was video of a rehearsal/jam session, but I loved that Janeway’s back was mostly to the camera — so that he was facing his bandmates, grooving and vibing with them. Love, love, love! Thanks, Todd. I’m feeling groovy on a gray Thursday morning! 😎
