Writing, for me, has to be like going to the bakery and looking through the “day old” bin. Sometimes the stuff in there is good, but sometimes its price is marked down for a reason. Maybe it’s stale or just didn’t turn out the way it was supposed to. When you buy it, you take a chance, but you’d be a fool not to at least take a look.
I should know better than to publish something the day I write it. I do better when I read it the day after, when it’s a day old. No matter how many times I reread and proofread on the original writing day, I see things on that second day that get missed on the first day.
Just like at the bakery, sometimes the writing is still fine the day after, but sometimes times it’s not.
I wrote something yesterday that had a point. The problem was that I couldn’t fully realize it and put into words. Also, the writing itself had some issues. The other problem was that I published it anyway, the same day I wrote it. I was convinced that it was coherent.
That piece got re-examined today and I de-published it. I just wasn’t able to connect the dots the way I thought I had.
Price reduced.
I wanted to post something yesterday to keep up with my self-imposed weekly schedule, which is a problem right there. Instead of focusing on a schedule, why not focus on writing good stuff and posting whenever that happens? But my weekly streak was about a year long, and I like the idea of weekly writing as practice, so….
Ultimately though, I got away from what works best for me- checking the day old writing bin.
Lesson learned?
I guess we’ll see….

Timing! I had the same thought this morning….grateful I hadn’t hit “send” on a project yesterday. Something about it was “off” and required overnight marination for me to see it. And I did! Love the whole bakery/half-baked imagery you brought in this post. I get it! 😜

Thanks Victoria! Too bad there isn’t a “retrieve post from email subscribers” button. 🤦🏼♂️😅

Such an interesting lesson! It’s the same for me too – maybe it’s like the bakery and there needs to be time for the dough to rise?? Love this brilliant lesson from you, my friend!

Thanks Wynne! I like the idea of the dough/writing rising 😎 I think I pulled my piece out of the oven too fast the other day 😅

I am going to use this sentence of yours “Instead of focusing on a schedule, why not focus on writing good stuff and posting whenever that happens?” as a mantra Todd.

Thanks Cristiana-but you seem to have no trouble posting good stuff on a weekly basis! 🤩
