Christmas is awesome and I love Christmas music too- but the whole season would be much better if we eliminated the super-lame, musical garbage that pollutes an otherwise jolly, lovely and beautiful genre of music.
These are the top tracks on my hated holiday music naughty list. Take a listen and see if you hate them too.
Carrie Underwood- Little Drummer Boy
Carrie’s five year old son joins in, resulting in an adorable duet to some, and a super-sappy, cringe-fest to me. Thereβs a big difference between sounding good for a kindergartener and sounding good for real.

Stevie Wonder- One Little Christmas Tree
I love Stevie Wonder, and I get that these lyrics may be a metaphor for something bigger…BUT….I canβt decide if this track is lame, stupid or both.

Paul McCartney- Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time

The Supremes- Children’s Christmas Song
The only thing worse than real children singing poorly, is adults acting as kids singing poorly in a song with a very cheesy, ultra-contrived story line. The producer who didnβt stop this shouldβve been fired.

Sia– Snowman
I’m hearing this track everywhere this year. π± The claymation style video is very cool but I just can’t handle the endless vocalοΏΌ whining. οΏΌ Makes me want to punch somebodyβ¦.

I could go on with more horrible holiday “hits”, these are just my top offenders. Feel free to dispute my list or add to it in the comments.
But first, I’ve got to chase some kids of my lawn. Wait…they might actually be reindeer….

Oh my goodness!!!! Yes! I love Sir Paul but HATE that tune! Likeβ¦I tense up when I hear it! Over producedβ¦or something? You might know what the technical, musical ick vibe is. π

Tense up- me too! I think itβs sort of like a βnails on the chalkboardβ effect for me. I even listened to the tune the whole way through yesterday before blogging about it- and thought β there really isnβt anything specifically objectionable about the it, and yet I just canβt stand it at allβ π

What???? No All I Want For Christmas is You???? This egregious oversight must be corrected immediately!! Then there’s &^%#< Grandma got run over by a *%^$@ Reindeer. Someone posted a FB meme about the Ben E. King version of Little Drummer Boy, which was pretty awful. However it was partly based on a semi-obscure classic very old Stax record called Philly Dog by The Mar Keys, which was a good tune which you, as a horn man, probably know since the horn players in the Mar Keys went on to become The Memphis Horns. The recently departed Steve Cropper and the too-long departed Donald “Duck” Dunn were also part of that group. So, skip over Little Drummer Boy and go straight to Philly Dog (the musical equivalent of “Fuget da gun, take da cannoli”.

πππ I will definitely check out Philly Dog. Point taken on Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer β I forgot that one somehow. This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I actually liked that Mariah Carey tune when it came out years ago-before I heard it 10 million timesπ± Merry Christmas Ben!π π»

Philly Dog is nothing fancy, as was the same with their other song Last Night, which was even less fancy. But that was part of the appeal of the classic Stax/Volt Memphis Soul era. Less refined and rawer than their Motown contemporaries, but that made it sound more soulful. Merry Christmas to you too, Todd!!

I 100% agree with that Stax/Motown comparisonπ

Hereβs my issue Todd. I donβt listen to a ton of radio but I have in recent weeks. Can they play anything other than the five or six standards that weβve all heard a million times. If I have to listen to Brenda Lee Rocking around the Christmas Tree or Mariah Carey one more time, Iβm going to lose my mind! Ha ha! Maybe itβs just the radio stations I South Eastern PA but itβs crazy. Ha ha.

I hear you Brian! Iβm really into Christmas CDs and vinyl, but when I do listen to the radio, I have two choices. The one station plays classic stuff that I have heard a zillion times and the other station plays all new stuff which for the most part sucks! π Maybe we need to either move or start our own radio station! π

I’m not familiar with the song by the Supremes — and this description makes me so glad, “adults acting as kids singing poorly in a song with a very cheesy, ultra-contrived story line.” That sounds awful! Thanks for the laugh, Joseph!

Yep β turns out not everything The Supremes did was actually supremeπ. Thanks Wynne!
